Research Focus

Impact of interpersonal variation in gut microbiota on human health and disease.

Research Key Words

Microbiome, microbiology, glycobiology, immunology, host-microbe nutrient metabolism, probiotics

Darryl Wesener earned a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2016 and recently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Wesener is developing a research program in the Department of Microbiology that will explore how probiotic supplements and fermented foods intersect with personalized microbiota compositions to modulate gut microbiota function and host immune phenotypes.  Dr. Wesener has developed swallowable microscopic biosensors that can measure how gut bacteria break down individual nutrients in germ-free mice, with the potential for use in human clinical trials.  Future directions for his research include the development of ingestible therapeutic particles for the treatment of GI inflammatory diseases.
