Campus Chemical Instrument Center and Foods for Health Co-Host Successful Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics Symposium

The 5th Annual Ohio Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics Symposium (OMSMS) was held on October 12-13, 2022, at the Ohio Union.  Over 140 faculty members, research staff, trainees, and industry scientists gathered for this annual two-day meeting designed to provide an opportunity for academic and industrial researchers in the region to present their findings, share information, discuss research challenges with colleagues, and spark new collaborations in the rapidly advancing fields of mass spectrometry and metabolomics.  The program attracts attendees from OSU and from universities throughout the Midwest region.

Foods for Health (FFH) has jointly hosted this annual scientific meeting with the Campus Chemical Instrument Center since 2017. Although FFH has an expanded research focus to include food & crop improvement and food perception, the use of data-intensive omic techniques is a foundation of the research initiative.  “OMSMS is a great platform for FFH to engage not only with our own campus community, but also with other experts who use metabolomics in food and nutrition research”, says Dr. Matt Teegarden, FFH Senior Research and Chair of the OMSMS Scientific Organizing Committee.  Invited speakers included Dr. Laura-Isobel Mcall (University of Oklahoma), an expert in the use of analytical chemistry instrumentation, and Dr. Jessica Prenni (Colorado State University) whose program applies mass spectrometry to address important issues in food and crop safety and quality.  Dr. Prenni’s presentation was on her contribution to the development of the Periodic Table of Foods, a global participatory effort to create a composition reference database of the food we eat. Additionally, FFH core faculty member Dr. Rachel Kopec was invited to present on her work with LC-MS metabolomics to translate dietary bioactive interactions.  The full agenda is available here.

A poster competition was held on day one of the conference, with 22 posters submitted, representing multiple OSU research programs from Chemistry & Biochemistry, Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology, Food Science & Technology, Horticulture & Crop Science, Human Nutrition as well as from students from regional universities in Ohio.  Four winners were selected through a competitive judging process and include Zihao Qi - OSU (RAD52-DBD Binding with DNA by Native MS and Mass Photometry), Asif RayhanUniversity of Cincinnati (Universal Mass Exclusion List for Enhanced Modification Mapping of RNA), Philip Lacey - OSU (Characterizing Membrane Mimetics and Protein Complex Behavior on the Waters Cyclic IMS by Native Mass Spectrometry) and Nishita Meshram – OSU (A Potential Role for Carotenoids and Carotenoid Metabolites in Influencing High-Fat Diet-Induced Colonic Mucosa Inflammation and Weight Gain).  We thank our numerous poster competition judges for thoughtfully evaluating and scoring each submission.

Conference organizers are especially grateful to the event sponsors, who include Agilent, Bruker, Sciex, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Peak Scientific, and Waters. It is through their generous support that this conference is possible.  Sponsor support allows us to keep the cost of the program affordable and bring cutting edge researchers to the OSU campus.

Dates for OMSMS 2023 will be announced in early 2023.  Contact CCIC-OMSMS@osu.edu for additional information about this annual event.
